7.5 Life-Work Balance

Life-work balance is a predictor of employee motivation, job satisfaction and is becoming a significant factor in job choice for candidates.
Workplace Issue: An employee begins to miss work, arrives late or shows a lack of interest.
Solution: Check whether the employee is still interested in the job, or if there are problems at home interfering with their motivation.
Motivation
Employee motivation is complex, but there are easy ways to try to identify what factors might be affecting an employee’s motivation. If there are concerns about an employee’s motivation to perform well, the employer should find the source of the problem.Workplace Issue: An employee begins to miss work, arrives late or shows a lack of interest.
Solution: Check whether the employee is still interested in the job, or if there are problems at home interfering with their motivation.
The employer or supervisor should:
- Check whether the individual’s life situation has recently changed. Is the employee facing unexpected challenges or difficulties that are carrying over into the workplace?
Tip for success: Use Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to help the employee or ask your local service provider for assistance in developing a work plan that will help you support your employee in a way that will resolve issues and benefit all parties. - Check whether the individual has misunderstood job tasks. This may account for the loss of interest at work.
Tip for success: Ask what an ideal work situation would be in order to identify potential misunderstandings regarding work conditions.
